Foodie

Who is a Foodie? If you love eating different foods and have a slew of WhatsApp pictures of all the foods you ate during your holidays, does it give you bragging rights to be called a Foodie? Or do you have to be trained in the Food Industry to qualify you as a foodie? .

The answer is ALL and NONE of the above! The actual Wikipedia definition is "A foodie is a person who has an ardent or refined interest in food and alcoholic beverages. A foodie seeks new food experiences as a hobby rather than simply eating out of convenience or hunger"

As a food industry veteran, I believe the important word here is "experience" and more than just being a hobby, it is pure passion. A foodie is someone who is passionate about food and who seeks out experiences through an appreciation of ingredients and their unique and subtle flavours. You can always spot one when you see them ripping the bread, enjoying the aroma of the food and picking the food apart on their plate before the even taste it!

Someone who loves to eat will enjoy a good meal, and keep coming back to that favourite place. The lover just wants seconds and orders what they know is good in a restaurant, while Foodies order what's different. Lovers shop one grocery store, whereas

Foodies will spend the day visiting specialty shops for ingredients. It is truly love vs. passion! A foodie will delve into the why's and what's of foods, try and experiment with pairings of foods, always searching for the uniqueness of the combinations that define that perfect food!

They question the ingredients, discuss the recipes and revel in the newness of it, almost like a child at Christmas. They understand and appreciate ingredients and will know that you used porcini mushrooms over generic, yuzu over lemon juice and champagne vinegar in that delicious dressing!

For all the Foodies out there, take your passion to the next level and enjoy the entire experience of the feel, the aroma and the colours of food. Take it up a notch, don't be afraid, Pick up that bowl and smell the soup!
